Procedure Description:
Evaluation for ADHD
What To Expect:
Dr. Wilson evaluates children for possible attention problems by gathering information from schools, teachers, parents, and other sources, talking with parents and the child, and performing a physical examination. Occasionally blood tests are recommended. Health insurance sometimes pays for the initial evaluation.
Preprocedure:
When you call to ask for an ADHD evaluation, we will mail out a packet including information on ADHD, questionnaires for teachers and parents, and a request for report cards, achievement test results, any learning or cognitive testing already done, and narratives from teachers and others that have opportunity to observe the child. After we receive this material, we can schedule an evaluation visit, which will take about one hour.
Postprocedure:
Depending on the diagnosis, Dr. Wilson may recommend medication, modifications to the school environment, or counseling. If medication is prescribed, Dr. Wilson will ask for followup visits 2-3 times a year.
